Live a first-hand experience of playing Taiko, the Japanese drums. Become part of the tradition and feel the energy in your hands in this taiko class experience. Great for individuals, family, and groups.

Overview

Taiko is a Japanese word that refers to several things such as Japanese drumming style, drum group, drum music or a drum itself. There are a wide variety of shapes and sizes of taiko that changed and developed throughout the long history of Japan in different traditional art forms such as Noh, Kyo-gen, Nagauta, and Kabuki.

The word “wadaiko” refers to a taiko of Japanese origin. It is a compound word, which consists of “wa”(Japanese) and “daiko” (a suffix of the word taiko). Daiko frequently appears in compound words such as nagado-daiko or shime-daiko, which can cause confusion. Daiko is just a suffix and has the same meaning as taiko. Nowadays taiko often refers to a kumi-daiko ensemble style, which has a relatively short history and was created by some taiko groups in the 1950s such as Osuwa-daiko and Za Ondekoza.

Join this drop-in taiko class and learn the basic taiko technique, simple traditional song, along with the history and structure of taiko. No experience or Japanese language needed.

Please note that this is essentially a group class. If there are others who sign up for the same time slot, you will be participating in a lesson with them. However, you may be the only participant in the class.
