Discover Okazaki, the ancient post town near Nagoya that is the birthplace of the first shogun, Ieyasu Tokugawa. The post town is also home of the famed Hatcho Miso.

Overview

History and delicious flavors collide in the ancient post town of Okazaki. Okazaki is a peaceful castletown located south-east of Nagoya city and is the birthplace of the first shogun, Ieyasu Tokugawa. He was the eldest son of a noble of Matsudaira Clan and was born in the Okazaki Castle, which is now considered one of Japan’s most famous castles.

Our tour takes us for a walk around the beautiful Okazaki Park; it’s particularly amazing during springtime when there are chances to see cherry blossoms and wisteria blooming around the gardens. Learn more about the history of Japan and the historical figures that helped shape this area from our guide and ask any further questions you may have.

We will also visit a miso brewery where the famous Hatcho Miso is made. The brewery uses traditional techniques that allow miso to mature for more than two years to give it its rich flavor. This type of miso began around 800 years ago and is still very much a part of everyday life in Nagoya today! There will be a chance to sample some of this amazing miso in some local cooking and purchase some unique souvenirs. Lastly, we will explore more of Okazaki with visits to the local shrines to feel the ancient vibes of the post town before heading back to modern Nagoya city.
